The Hairy Coos
Tarraleah's long term residents.
The Highland Cows (also known as Hairy Coos ) are an ancient Scottish breed of beef cattle with long horns and thick wavy fur. The breed was developed in the Scottish Highlands and live happily at Tarraleah - even during our sometimes snowy winter weather!
Highland Coos are known as a hardy breed due to the rugged nature of their native Scottish Highlands, with high rainfall and strong winds.
Left to their own devices, they eat plants other cattle avoid - of course at Tarraleah they are fed daily on things they really like to eat, like hay, and hay, and .... well, hay.
Although groups of cattle are generally called herds, a group of highland cows is known as a 'fold'. The breed is affectionately known as "Highland coos", "shaggy coos", or "hairy coos"
At Tarraleah we often have baby cows but Fergus, our longest resident, and grandfather of them all, has become a favorite family member. Just ask your guide to introduce you!
You can join the daily feeding ritual when you visit Tarraleah. Make sure you book in at Reception so you don't miss out.
